In our previous article, we mentioned that to achieve a legally long term stay (up to 1 year) in Spain, we opted for the Non-Lucrative Visa. In this article, we will tell you what this visa is about and what documentation is required:
1- What is the Non-Lucrative Visa?
It is a visa that is requested in the country of origin (not from Spain), which authorizes legal residence in Spain without carrying out work activity for up to 1 year and can be renewed.
2- Who can apply for the Non-Lucrative Visa?
Anyone that fits the following criteria:
- is NOT a citizen of the European Union, Schengen, Switzerland or family member of any citizen of the same
- has no criminal records in their country of residence or origin
- has financial means to pay for their stay and return, which are equal to or greater than 400% of the IPREM, and an additional 100% for each family member. *these amounts vary by year
- obtains private health insurance for the duration of the visa
3- Where do you apply for the Non-Lucrative Visa?
At the consulate or embassy of your country of origin or legal residence.
4- What requirements do you need?
I suggest checking with your consulate/embassy since the requirements may vary depending on the location, even between consulates in the same country, such as Los Angeles vs. to the one in Chicago. But generally speaking, you would need the following documents:
- Visa Application
- Passport (minimum validity of 1 year)
- Criminal record
- Proof of financial means
- Proof of health insurance
- Medical certificate
- Payment of Visa and Resident Fees
5- How long does the approval take?
It can be up to 3 months from the day the application was received and registered.
6- If approved, how long do I have to enter Spain?
You must enter Spain within the validity period of the visa but not to exceed the 3 months.
